Bank Holiday Sparks DIY Surge – AND Two-Thirds of Homeowners Don’t Know How to Bleed a Radiator

bWith the final Bank Holiday of summer approaching, millions of Brits are expected to turn their attention to DIY jobs before autumn sets in. But new research from UK Radiators has found that 67% of homeowners aged 25–40 don’t know how to bleed their radiator, instead relying on family members for help with the simple but essential task.

Bleeding a radiator – a five-minute job requiring only a radiator key – improves heating efficiency, reduces energy waste, and prevents noisy pipes. Yet the survey highlights a growing “DIY confidence gap” among younger homeowners.

Do’s and Don’ts of Radiator Bleeding

UK Radiators’ heating specialists share the golden rules every homeowner should know:

Do’s and Don’ts of Radiator Bleeding

Do’sDon’t’s
Turn off your central heating before you start.Attempt to bleed while the heating is on – this risks scalding.
Use a radiator key and open the bleed valve slowly.Force a stiff valve – use the correct key and gentle pressure.
Keep a cloth and small bowl underneath to catch drips.Leave the valve open too long, which can cause flooding.
Close the valve as soon as water (not air) escapes.Ignore cold spots on your radiator – they’re a sign bleeding is overdue.
Re-pressurise your boiler if the pressure drops.

Expert Comment

A spokesperson for UK Radiators said:

“Bleeding your radiator is one of the easiest ways to cut heating costs and keep your home comfortable, yet our research shows many younger homeowners are still shying away from it. The Bank Holiday is the perfect time to get confident with these small but vital jobs before the colder months arrive.”
