Food and drink plants use chemicals for a good reason. Detergents, disinfectants, descalers and other products help keep equipment and production areas hygienic. A chemical chosen to control one type of risk can introduce another if it is stored, diluted or applied badly.

Safe chemical handling in food manufacturing therefore has two jobs. Safe chemical handling needs to support hygiene without exposing workers to unnecessary harm.

Know What Is Actually Being Used

A chemical inventory sounds basic, but it is difficult to control substances properly if the site does not have a clear picture of what is present, where it is used and who may be exposed.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations require employers to assess risks from hazardous substances and prevent exposure where reasonably practicable, or control it where prevention is not possible. The assessment should consider normal use as well as storage, disposal, spills and other foreseeable emergencies.

Safety data sheets are useful inputs, but they are not a substitute for a workplace COSHH assessment. The assessment needs to reflect how the substance is actually used on the line, in the washdown area or during maintenance.

Dilution and Application Need Consistency

Concentrated cleaning products can create significantly different exposure risks from correctly diluted solutions. The difference between concentrated and diluted products makes dosing and application methods important controls.

Where possible, closed or automated dosing can reduce direct handling. If workers have to prepare solutions manually, they need clear instructions on concentration, sequence, suitable containers and what to do if a splash or spill occurs.

HSE’s guidance on disinfectants in food and drink manufacturing specifically highlights safe dilution, chemical compatibility, application procedures, washing facilities, emergency arrangements and training as matters to consider in a COSHH assessment.

Storage Is Part of Chemical Safety

A locked chemical room is not automatically a safe chemical room. Products still need suitable containers, legible labels and storage arrangements that take account of incompatibility, leaks and access.

Decanting a chemical into an unlabelled bottle creates obvious confusion. Less obvious problems can arise when incompatible products are stored together or when a container is returned to the wrong location because the storage system is unclear.

Good storage makes the correct behaviour straightforward. Workers should be able to identify the product, find the instructions and return it to the right place without guesswork.

PPE Should Support Better Controls

Some chemical tasks may require gloves, eye protection, protective clothing or respiratory protection. PPE can be necessary, but it should not be used to compensate for a poor process if exposure can be prevented or better controlled in another way.

The choice needs to match the substance and the way it is used. Workers also need to know how to put the equipment on, remove it without contaminating themselves, inspect it and replace it when necessary.

Training Has to Reflect the Product and the Task

Workers do not need to memorise a chemistry textbook. They do need to understand the hazards of the substances they handle, the controls provided, the signs that something has gone wrong and the emergency procedure.

COSHH Training can provide a foundation in hazardous-substance awareness, handling, storage, disposal and incident reporting. Site-specific instruction should then explain the actual chemicals, concentrations, equipment and procedures used in the facility.

Chemical handling is only one part of the risk picture in food production. Machinery, manual handling, slips, transport and maintenance can all sit alongside it. A wider programme of Health and safety courses can help organisations cover those different training needs without assuming that one general course is enough for every role.

Make Spills and Exposure Predictable Events

Nobody wants a spill, splash or unexpected release, but a credible safety system plans for them. Workers should know how to raise the alarm, whether they are expected to isolate the area, where emergency washing facilities are and when specialist help is needed.

Near misses are worth reviewing too. A damaged cap, a leaking dispenser or repeated dosing error may show that the system needs attention before a more serious exposure occurs.

Safe chemical handling is less about telling people to be careful and more about removing uncertainty. When the right product, concentration, equipment, storage and response are clear, workers have a much better chance of doing the job safely every time.
