As the UK braces for another warm spell, a little-known cooling trick once popular with older generations is being tipped as a simple but effective way to stay safe in soaring temperatures.
According to Neil McKenzie, mobility expert at Halton Stairlifts, one of the most overlooked methods is cooling the body’s pulse points – wrists, ankles, neck and behind the knees – with a damp flannel or chilled water bottle.
“It’s something our grandparents swore by,” Neil explains. “Before air con or high-tech fans, they used what they had – and the science still stacks up. Cooling key pulse points helps regulate body temperature quickly and naturally.”
Why it matters:
Older adults are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, especially if they live alone, take certain medications, or have mobility issues that make it harder to cool down.
Neil’s top natural tips to keep older adults cool this summer:
- Shut curtains or blinds in sunny rooms to block excess heat
- Eat light, cold meals to avoid raising internal body temperature
- Keep a foot soak or spray bottle in the fridge for fast relief
- Swap hot brews for decaf iced tea or fruit-infused water
- Wear loose, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen indoors
“When you’re older, you often feel the heat more – but you don’t always show it. These small habits can make a big difference, especially during unexpected heatwaves,” Neil adds.
