Homeowners Warned: Unsecured Garden Furniture During Storm Eowyn Could Lead to Liability Fines

With Storm Eowyn set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the UK, Home Safety Expert Neil McKenzie from Halton Stairlifts  is urging Brits to secure their garden furniture and loose fixtures,or risk facing significant financial and legal consequences.

Unsecured items such as trampolines, garden chairs, and decorations can become dangerous projectiles in high winds, potentially causing injury to members of the public or damage to property. Under UK negligence laws, homeowners could face personal injury claims, which may result in compensation payouts ranging from thousands to tens of thousands of pounds, depending on the severity of the injury.

Local authorities also have the power to fine homeowners for hazards under the Highways Act 1980. For example, unsecured items or overgrown hedges obstructing public pathways could result in fines of up to £1,000, with higher penalties for non-compliance.

Home Safety Expert Neil McKenzie from Halton Stairlifts commented:

“Storms like Eowyn are a reminder of the responsibility homeowners have to minimise risks. Simple actions like securing garden furniture, inspecting fences, and bringing loose items indoors can prevent accidents and protect against costly claims or fines.”

How to Prepare for Storm Eowyn and Protect Your Property:

  1. Secure Outdoor Furniture: Use heavy weights or fasteners to secure items prone to movement.
  2. Inspect and Fix Loose Fixtures: Check for unstable fences, gates, or outdoor decorations.
  3. Bring Smaller Items Indoors: Move lightweight objects, such as plant pots and cushions, into a shed or house.
  4. Review Home Insurance: Check that your policy covers liability for storm-related incidents.

Storm Eowyn is expected to bring winds of up to [specific mph] in some regions, increasing the risk of flying debris. Experts stress the importance of acting promptly to safeguard public safety and avoid the legal and financial fallout of negligence.
