Things You Must Know Before Becoming a Publican

Many people have considered becoming a pub landlord, thinking that it is an easy life, as you get to do a lot of socialising. However, it is not a career you want to rush into without doing any research, as there is a lot more to the role than many people realise. Being a landlord comes with a lot of responsibility, and there are numerous tasks that require various skills. You can find more information listed below about things you need to know before becoming a landlord that can help ensure you make an informed decision before entering the hospitality industry.

The Hours Can Be Long

If you are running a pub by yourself with no partner, one of the first things you will notice is that the hours can be very long. You can often have deliveries early in the morning, sometimes as early as 7 am, and you will be up and about until you close in the evening, sometimes even after midnight. As such, you must have a suitable support network and hire reliable people to assist you; otherwise, you may find yourself getting burned out quickly if you lack support.

Many Skills Required

A publican has many feathers in their cap, and there are various skills they will need to master to ensure they can run their pub successfully. You must be a customer-focused individual who can deliver excellent service to all your guests, including even the most challenging regulars. You will also need to be able to hire quality staff, train them effectively, and manage your team efficiently. You will need to look after your cellar, ensuring that your cask beers are properly cared for and that you rotate your stock to use the oldest first. Being able to plan and order the correct amount of stock is also a vital part of being a publican, and this includes the food if your pub will serve meals. You must also ensure that you take care of all necessary paperwork, which may include payroll for employees, accounting, and compliance with employment legislation and other relevant laws and regulations.

Marketing Your Business

Another essential skill for running a successful pub is marketing your establishment effectively and attracting a steady stream of customers. Choosing the right location is crucial for this factor, as you will want to be in an area with a high volume of passing trade and a substantial local customer base. You will need to embrace social media and build a loyal following for your business, which can help ensure its success.

Organising Events

You will also need to organise events for your bub to help make it a success and a vital part of the local community. Whether you are organising fetes or craft fairs in the car park, discos, live bands, or special events for New Year’s or Halloween, hosting multiple events at your establishment can help attract customers and ensure you are consistently busy. You will need to be a good judge of what your customers like and try to set your preferences aside. Having events that attract a broad spectrum of the local population will give you a diverse customer base and make your pub a hub of the local community.

Running a pub can be a lot of hard work and will require various skills for it to be successful, but it can also be a highly rewarding and enjoyable career. By working hard and developing the necessary skills, you can ensure success in this career and make it one that you thoroughly enjoy.
