BRITS EAT TWO MILLION TONNES OF POTATOES EVERY YEAR

Brits eat more than two million tonnes of potatoes every year, according to new nationwide research.

The poll, from potato brand Nanna Tate, revealed that as a nation, we consume a staggering 2.09 million tonnes of potatoes annually.

That’s the equivalent of 139,000 double-decker buses, 27,900 blue whales or 580 Eiffel Towers.

The survey, based on the eating habits of 2,000 UK adults, found the average Brit enjoys spuds three days a week, with an average portion size of almost 200g per sitting.

Over a year, that adds up to 31kg per person, the weight of a fully grown Labrador.

When it comes to our favourite ways to eat potatoes, chips and fries reign supreme, with 75% of Brits enjoying these weekly, followed by mash (41%), jacket potatoes (40%) and roasties (36%).

Lucia Washbrook, Sales and Marketing Director at Nanna Tate, said: “From golden chips to buttery mash, potatoes are part of the nation’s DNA. Whether it’s a Sunday roast, a chippy tea or a pub meal, potatoes are almost always present.

“At Nanna Tate we’re all about championing the versatility and deliciousness of potatoes, through tasty recipe inspiration and encouraging people to unexpect the expected when it comes to the humble spud.”
