As the UK faces widespread power cuts following severe weather, health and safety expert Derek Bruce, from SMSTS Course, has issued vital guidance for families preparing their Christmas dinner during outages. Over 99 power cuts have already been reported nationwide, disrupting homes and holiday plans.
“Christmas is a time for family and celebration, but power outages bring unique challenges,” says Derek Bruce. “It’s critical to stay safe when improvising cooking methods or using power generators.”
Key Safety Advice
Protect Perishable Food
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain cold temperatures. A closed fridge can keep food safe for up to 4 hours, and a full freezer for up to 48 hours.
Discard any perishable items kept above 4°C (40°F) for more than 2 hours to avoid foodborne illnesses.
Alternative Cooking Methods
Use gas stoves with caution, and only light them manually if safe.
Outdoor charcoal or gas grills should never be used indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Generator Safety
Operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home, with the exhaust directed away from windows and doors.
Avoid back feeding electricity into home wiring without a professionally installed transfer switch.
Store fuel safely and never refuel a hot or running generator.
Additional Tips
- Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio to stay informed.
- Ensure smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are in working order.
- Exercise fire safety by keeping flammable items away from open flames or heat sources.
“By taking simple precautions, you can safely navigate power cuts and still enjoy your Christmas festivities,” adds Derek Bruce.
