Why You Shouldn’t Ignore That Flickering Lightbulb – It Could Mean More Than a Loose Bulb

Expert warns of potential electrical hazards in UK homesFlickering light bulbs are often dismissed as a minor inconvenience, but according to health and safety expert Derek Bruce from SMSTS Course, they could indicate a serious electrical issue that poses a fire risk. While a loose bulb or an aging light fixture may be the cause, persistent flickering can signal deeper electrical faults such as overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, or deteriorating connections.

These issues can lead to overheating, sparking, and in extreme cases, electrical fires.Derek Bruce explains: “Many homeowners ignore a flickering light, assuming it is a simple bulb issue, but in reality, it can be an early warning sign of a much bigger problem.

Electrical fires account for nearly half of all accidental house fires in the UK, and poor wiring is a major contributor.

If you notice frequent flickering or dimming, it is essential to investigate the cause rather than overlook it.

”Common Causes of Flickering LightsLoose Bulbs: Ensure bulbs are securely screwed in.

Faulty Light Switches or Fixtures: A worn-out switch or an old fixture may cause inconsistent power flow.

Overloaded Circuits: If lights flicker when high-energy appliances are in use, it could indicate a strained electrical system.

Wiring Issues: Frayed or outdated wiring can create dangerous arcing and sparks behind walls.

When to Seek Professional Help

If flickering persists after changing the bulb or adjusting the fixture, Derek Bruce advises contacting a qualified electrician. “Ignoring electrical faults can put lives at risk. If you experience flickering throughout your home or notice burning smells, buzzing sounds, or discoloured outlets, turn off the power and seek expert help immediately.

”Preventative Steps to Improve Electrical Safety

Schedule regular electrical inspections, especially in older homes.

Avoid overloading sockets and use surge protectors where necessary.Upgrade outdated wiring to meet modern safety standards.

Pay attention to warning signs such as flickering, sparking, or warm outlets.

Electrical safety is not something to take lightly. If a lightbulb flickers repeatedly, it may not just be an annoyance but a sign that urgent action is needed.
